'New' DS4'

Good evening,
I posted this on the Tech Forum, but didn’t receive any comments, just wondering if anyone else was experiencing similar problems!
I recently took delivery of a used (500+ miles) 2 owner April 2024 reg. DS 4 Petrol Auto Rivoli.
In retrospect, the first mistake was to buy from a dealer 4+ hours away, (there aren’t that many DS dealers close!) although I did have a test drive of the car.
I have a few problems with the car that DS don’t seem to have an answer too, according to the nearest DS Warranty dealer that recently carried out an upgrade to the gearbox ECU.

  1. The speed limit recognition system has a mind of it’s own! Very often it shows 19 when in a 30 zone, (19 mph is 30km/h) & 25 when in a 40 mph zone, (25 mph is 40km/h) etc. Understand from the dealer a common fault, DS tech. have no solution!
  2. The automatic headlamp dip function does not seem to work.
These points have been raised with DS Care.
The automatic remote unlocking/welcome facility doesn’t always work.
The engine is very noisy on acceleration.

I thought I was buying a ‘prestige’ brand, I traded an MB GLA 200, seems I was wrong!
Sorry to go on, anyone experiencing the same problems?

This might help ?

  1. On my DS4 I sometimes have to click “ok” if the display has a “?” next to the speed, it then corrects itself .
Also check you’ve set your car to the correct setting, ie, mph or kmh
My son has a Vauxhall Astra it is the exact same set up, he explained it to me but I cant recall the details.
  2. Automatic dipped headlamps has to be switched on in settings and turned to “Auto” on the stalk.
This function only works if outside conditions are met, mist, drizzle, fog , low battery, car not used for a number of days, can affect if the feature comes on.
When the conditions allow you’ll see “AUTO” icon lit up in green on the bottom of the display, if the “Auto” icon turns grey it’s temporarily stopped, if “Auto” disappears from the screen the conditions are not allowing the function, but it will come back on by itself.
In many driving conditions you might see the headlamps are staying on “high beam”, (headlamp icon is blue), this is correct, they dip to low beam when the car “sees” oncoming traffic.
The headlamps will try to use high beam when they can.
Also check that the camera area on the windscreen is clean.
I have the Matrix LED’s not sure if you have the same or the standard LED’s ?
I think they might operate slightly different , but the way the main/dipped beam auto function works is the same on both types of headlamp I believe ?

Engine holds its revs far too long between 1st, 2nd & 3rd gear changes, I find myself using the paddles at low speeds to help the gear change.
Auto locking & auto welcome lights is an absolute nonsense, both features have a mind of their own, my car is currently being looked at for the 6th time to try and get these features to work as the manual says they should.
Currently DS technical have no answer !!!

I gave up a Volvo R Design Lux Nav for my DS4 E Tense Performance Plus, like you I feel it was not a good move.
The DS range looks nice, but in my opinion the build quality is failing the brand.

Thank you for your response.
The speed limit recognition problem is weird. As I understand it, the way you have described a possible solution is when you’re in Drive Assist mode, & yes, I’ve seen the OK come up, & cruise control adjusts. My problem is when you’re driving on a say 40mph road, it suddenly shows 25mph, for no apparent reason. The same for 30 & 50 mph. 60 seems OK. I live on a road with a 30mph limit & it’s fine all the time.
Regarding the auto dip feature, I assumed the blue indicator light would change to green when it dipped, & vice versa. So it doesn’t? I have it in auto, but often get ‘flashed’ so dip manually. Really haven’t fathomed out the lights or the touchscreen properly come to that.
I have Customer Complaints reference with DS Care, but they say the speed indication problem is with their tech team.
I like the car apart from niggly problems.

The headlamp icon changes from green to blue when it switches to high beam, and back again for dipped.

The Auto icon is lower down on the display.
This is to show when the system is operating in Auto mode.
The colour could be green, grey or not showing at all, depending on conditions.

Do you have the Matrix headlamps ?

You could try to update the sat nav, I think it gets the speed from the cars location ?

I find it one of the most frustrating cars to get used to, especially the media/user controls.

It not user friendly at all.
If you look at some online video reviews, most say the user controls and media side of things is far too complicated.

Thanks again.
Mine definitely doesn’t change from blue to green except when I change manually, so it isn’t working then. The Auto light seems to function. The spec shows Matrix lights are fitted.
Regarding the satnav, I’ve yet to use it, however the system version is NHW 1.26.80.7 which I understand is the latest.
I’m convinced these faults were with the car when the dealer sold it, but basically they don’t want to know now, saying it’s up to the ‘local’ DS warranty dealer to sort, & they don’t have a solution!
Rgds,

If it was bought from a DS dealership they have to start the warranty process.

So I checked today on my car what icons should be showing on the dash.

When I drove to work this morning it was dark.
On the dash was the dipped icon in green,( top of dash display left hand side) , opposite was the side lights icon (Daylight Running Lights) also in green.
At the bottom was the AUTO icon in green.
Driving along the top dipped headlamp icon (green) turned to blue when the headlamps automatically switched to main beam, this stayed like this (blue) even when traffic was approaching or if I was coming up to traffic ahead of me, but you could see the Matrix features altering the direction of the beam not to dazzle other drivers.
It would then redirect the main beam across the road when traffic ahead was clear.

Turning from dipped beam to main beam depends on weather conditions and external ambiant lighting, for instance when I pulled off the motorway into a built up area with plenty of roadside lighting my headlamps went back to dipped (green icon), they switched back to main beam when I pulled into our works car park and were also on main beam (blue icon) all the time I was on the motorway.

Driving home from work it was light, the side lights (Day Light Running Lights) come on with only the sidelight icon (green) showing on the dash in green, NO DIPPED HEADLIGHT ICON & NO AUTO ICON WAS SHOWING, this is because the auto feature only works at night when dipped headlamps come on.
If you have Matrix lights it says Matrix stamped on the side of the headlamp unit.
Check to see if you have auto dim set up in your vehicle settings and set to auto on the stalk.

Can you see the AUTO icon on the dash display at night , bottom of dash display on the right hand side, (UK right hand drive) ?

A low battery can also hibernate the auto features.

The AUTO icon can be green (activated), grey (temporarily hibernated, conditions not met), or not showing at all on the dash until all conditions are met, ie, ambient lighting dark enough, battery good, weather conditions favourable, car has been used for at least 15 minutes over a period of 7 days.
Its not often that the AUTO icon is not visible at all on my car, but it has happened, it’s usually green or grey depending on conditions.

Thanks for your detailed reply, sorry for the late response.
The car was purchased from a DS dealer, unfortunately 4 hours away! Mistake.
I’m convinced they knew of the speed limit recognition problem when I bought it. Seems the car did 12 miles in 4 months, basically sitting on their forecourt, only just found this out, they didn’t put it through their workshop before delivery, thinking about next course of action.
Yesterday, it got worse, two dots in red circle sometimes showing where previously 30 was shown! Still no solution from DS according to the nearest DS Warranty dealer
Back to lights, from your description, mine definitely don’t show blue/green on auto. Another fault, it is booked in to the dealer next month.
Does anyone have DS contact other than Customer Care, who, it seems to me, are unable to assist.

I’ve found DS Customer Care very helpful.
To the point where they were a little bit over caring by phoning me every other day.

I guess its who you talk to ?

Do you see the auto icon at all ?
Botton of dash display right hand side ?
If its there it will be green when active, grey when conditions not met, it can sometimes disappear if camera is dirty or low battery ect…

Yes, AUTO light does come on.
As far as DS Care is concerned, they said they couldn’t any more, & I haven’t had them follow up since.
