Sticky Door Handle

So another door handle has started to stick half in half out.
This is the second one in a couple of months, the first one changed under warranty, this one booked in to be done with the dealership.

Apparently this is such a common issue that dealerships have started to stock the handles.
Anyone else had this issue ?

My concern is what happens when the warranty runs out, these things cant be cheap ?

Are they easy to get at from the inside ?

I never heard of it. Is it gets stuck or some kind of electrical problem; and is it causing unable to use? Would you show how its looking?

Thats the rear drivers side stuck in the open position.
Its a mechanical issue I believe ?

The one in the photo was changed under warranty a couple of months ago.
Now the passenger door is stuck in the closed position, sometimes it does function ok, but when it dont work it’s either stuck in or out or half in & half out.
The car is booked in to have it changed after Xmas, thats the earliest they can do it.

I’ve read a few reports about this being common on the DS4, my dealership service department now keep a stock of the handles because of the number of claims.

Apparently the inside mechanism that goes faulty and the exterior handle both come as one unit so they cant just replace the inside faulty mechanism.

You’ll notice mine are gloss black, the original colour underneath is chrome but I had them wrapped.
So now I have to pay to have the new handle wrapped again like I did when the first one went faulty..
Personally I prefer the black to the original chrome.

I find the chrome a bit dated but thats just my opinion.
The DS badges on the back of my DS4 E Tense Performance Line come black as standard, so I though it makes sense to de-chrome the handles.
The car is pearl white with a pearl black roof, black badges, so chrome handles just didnt look right.
The wrap can always be removed if I sell the car and someone wanted to go back to chrome !

Were the door handlers black from the factory or did you wrap them?

Had them wrapped.
They are chrome underneath.
I was there when they wrapped them, they dont remove the handles or go into the mechanism, its all done from the outside.

Personally I think chrome is a bit dated.
You dont see many new cars these days with chrome handles or badges.

Maybe the wrapping process affected their durability. They had to be kept open even when the system tried to close them.

If the doors are opened and kept open whilst applying the wrap, the handles dont try to retract.
The handles only retract if the doors are physically closed, so applying the wrap with the door in the fully open position wont cause any issues, the handles stay in the open/out position.

It doesn’t look like an electrical problem because you said it works sometimes. Maybe some debris or corrosion (dirty water, dust etc.) would make the retcract mechanism stuck and causes problems. There are no information about retractable door handles are waterproof or dustproof inside. My colleague had had an Jaguar i-pace which also had retractable door handles. All handles were broken down because of ice inside handles. You may try to get your broken handle after replacement and check what makes it stuck.

I think its more mechanical than electric because sometimes it works, then it might stick in, then sometimes out.
Service department have said its a common issue with these handles.

They did say the handle and the internal mechanism come as a complete unit, so it looks like i’ll have to get it wrapped again .

I wouldnt mind trying to see how to remove the inner door panel so i can do it myself in the future once the warranty expires.

There is a topic about removing front/rear door panels by @AvatarPL in the DS4 section

Back in September my front passenger door handle was inconsistent when locking — sometimes it retracted, sometimes it didn’t. Very hit and miss. Like yours, it was eventually replaced under warranty, though I remember the cost being around £400. Initially I was billed for half of that amount, even though the dealer agreed it should have been a warranty repair DS themselves insisted it wasn’t. Eventually I was refunded the half I had to pay.

Frustratingly, over the past week or so my rear passenger door handle has started misbehaving too. It now neither fully retracts when locked or fully extends when opened, instead sitting awkwardly halfway in and halfway out unless I physically push it in. I’m putting up with it for now as the car is no longer under warranty and I really don’t want to face a £400+ bill

When I soundproof the doors, I’ll probably remove all the door handles and preserve them. I can see that this will cause problems.

It’s the passenger handle this time for me as well, currently its fully retracted and wont pop out unless pushed manually.
Looking at the link Andrew put on here I think I would have the confidence and tools to remove the door panels and get to the rear of handle myself if need be, but at the moment I’m going down the warranty route.
However, looking at the photos it seems as though even after reming the panels you cant see the rear of handle on the front door ??

From past experience, I would imagine removing the door panel might also mean buying new plastic clips that hold the door panel on, they tend to snap when pulling the panel off.

Therefore, it’s best to do this when the out temp. is +20 degrees Celsius or warmer. This reduces the risk of cracking because the plastic becomes more flexible.

I have no such confidence therefore a half in/half out handle that needs pushed in it’ll have to be for me - and, as you say, even removing the panel may not reveal the rear of the handle…..and if it did, what then?!

Since it was installed, it can be removed. You have to pull it out from the door and then repair it, as it’s easier to see rear.

I don’t have any such problem (yet!) - but just wondering if there is any preventative action (e.g. PTFE oil in the right place, or de-icer before opening when freezing). But sounds like it may be more of a maufacturing defect/weakness.

BTW - on your pearl white car @Jactac agree the black handles look much better than they would in chrome.

There were also versions with body-colored door handles.
I’ve never seen it in real.

This is what it looks like after removal. Here it’s gray instead of chrome. And it’s not wrapped but painted.

So many plastics… Its probably some plastic in mechanism goes bad due to wear or outdoor conditions making it unable to work properly. This handle being used on DS3 Crossbacks as well. I wonder if they are having the same problem.

Superb photos again from Andrew :+1:

Unfortunately though, they sort of confirm that the whole handle and mechanism come as a sealed one piece unit.
I dont think its something that can be lubricated/oiled ect.

Once exposed does the unit come out from the rear of the door or out through the outside of the door ?
